The Honourable Supreme Court of India has finally showed ‘green signal' to the historical and revolutionary Right to Education Act that will empower parents to render their children, from age 6 to 14 years, compulsory primary education for free! We, at Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, are very happy for the ruling and salute the Government of India for taking this step that is going to change the face of this nation forever.
This Act will mean that every child will have the necessary right to get primary education, no matter what socio-economical background it belongs to. The dire need of the most basic education among the young blood of India will soon be sufficed if this Act gets all the support needed. Under this Act, 25% seats of all government, semi-government and private, granted as well as non-granted schools will be kept reserved for students coming from economically poor families.
But ironically the government of Gujarat has been trying all means to avoid implementation of the Right to Education Act. It is the responsibility of Department of Education but still no acute model has been developed to implement this Act; thus keeping the children of Gujarat deprived of this very important facility. Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, knows that one of the watering-roots of his ‘empire' is being flourished by the business of education. Government schools have been kept aloof of any main-stream facilities and private schools have been given benefits in the name of ‘subsidies'. The fees have skyrocketed from a mere Rs. 200 to thousands. Parents from poor and middle-class families can only dream about educating their children in good schools.
Through this short article on my blog, I just wish that the current Gujarat government makes credible efforts, keeping its greed aside, to implement this Act and give our children what they deserve.
